In an effort to make learning more engaging and practical, Bangladesh is introducing 'Science Toys' into its primary education curriculum. State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj announced this initiative, aiming to cultivate scientific thinking and creativity among young students.
Shifting Focus to Hands-on Learning
According to Hajjaj, the goal is to move beyond traditional book learning to a more interactive and enjoyable experience. By using hands-on activities and play materials, students will be able to grasp scientific concepts more easily and develop a deeper understanding of the subject.
This initiative was highlighted during an event organized by UNICEF Bangladesh, which focused on the 'Foundational Learning Action Tracker (FLAT)'. Hajjaj emphasized the importance of building a strong foundation in basic skills like reading, writing, and arithmetic, alongside fostering creativity and innovation.
Expanding Educational Opportunities
Alongside the introduction of science-based materials, the government is also planning to establish 'Math Labs' in every primary school. These labs will provide children with the tools and resources needed to master fundamental mathematical concepts in a fun and engaging way.
To support these efforts, the government has decided to provide free school uniforms, aiming to retain students in schools and reduce dropout rates. The 'Free School Uniform Distribution Programme' is set to launch on August 16.
Moreover, improvements are being made to the Mid-Day Meal programme, with a focus on addressing previous shortcomings. Enhanced monitoring and evaluation systems will ensure the effective implementation of all educational initiatives.
