Jason Arday, the University of Cambridge professor who made headlines as its youngest black professor, has resigned amid a plagiarism scandal. Arday stepped down from his positions as a sociology of education professor and a fellow at Jesus College, following an investigation by the university into accusations of academic misconduct.

Plagiarism Allegations

Arday faced claims that he plagiarised parts of his PhD thesis. US academic Nathan Cofnas alleged that multiple sections of Arday's doctoral dissertation were copied from other works. Questions also arose about some of Arday's stated achievements.

Response and Resignation

In a letter posted online, Arday said resigning was 'the only way' to end a 'difficult period', but insisted it should not be'mistaken for an acceptance of the narratives that have surrounded me'. He added that the decision was made as he had reached 'the limits of what any person should reasonably be expected to endure'.

University's Investigation

Cambridge announced it had begun an investigation following new information about Arday's academic qualifications and honorary appointments. The university had previously defended Arday, dismissing plagiarism claims regarding his thesis and journal publications.
