The international oil benchmark, Brent crude, surged past the $100 mark, reaching $101.21 per barrel, driven by renewed hostilities between the United States and Iran. This spike, the first since late July, has heightened fears of increased inflation and potential interest rate hikes by major central banks. The rise in crude prices has already dragged down stock markets, with the Dow closing 0.8 percent lower and European markets experiencing significant drops.

The jump in oil prices has coincided with a sharp increase in European natural gas prices, which have reached their highest levels since early 2023, topping 80 euros per megawatt-hour. Nations across Europe are rushing to replenish their gas stocks ahead of the winter season, further exacerbating the energy crisis. Kathleen Brooks, research director at XTB trading group, noted that the $100-a-barrel mark is a significant psychological level for markets, raising costs for businesses and consumers and potentially weighing on economic growth.

In the United States, the main oil contract, West Texas Intermediate, also climbed to over $96 a barrel. Patrick O'Hare, chief market analyst at Briefing.com, attributed the price surge to the ongoing retaliatory strikes between the US and Iran. The escalating conflict has not only affected oil prices but also put domestic pressure on President Donald Trump, with average diesel prices in the US reaching a record $5.94 per gallon ahead of the November midterm elections.

Investors are now closely watching the US inflation data due on Friday, which could solidify expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike next week. Fawad Razaqzada, an analyst at Forex.com, explained that inflation data aligning with or exceeding expectations would likely raise the likelihood of a rate hike. Meanwhile, the European Central Bank is expected to lift eurozone interest rates on Thursday, adding to the global inflationary pressures.

The surge in oil prices and inflation concerns have also driven yields on government debt higher, as investors seek greater returns. The yield on the 10-year US Treasury bond jumped to its highest level since 2023, despite the Treasury Department's announcement of an expanded buyback program. Additionally, markets are worried about the escalating trade fight between Washington and Ottawa, with the Trump administration announcing an incoming import ban, including on alcoholic beverages.
