The Directorate of Audit, Intelligence and Investigation has initially detected VAT evasion by online retailer Alpha e Shop. The Directorate's preventive teams uncovered the evasion during raids on two of the company's showrooms, according to a press release by the National Board of Revenue (NBR). After examining seized documents, the VAT authorities estimated the evaded revenue to be around Taka two crore. Alpha e Shop has verbally agreed to pay the evaded amount.

Background on the Investigation

The Directorate of Audit, Intelligence and Investigation had previously conducted a field-level survey to identify VAT evasion by businesses operating on online platforms. As part of this initiative, several online businesses, including Alpha e Shop, were brought under investigation. The company, which imports and sells various high-end products such as branded fans, decorative fans, lighting products, chandeliers, electronics, air conditioners, and televisions, was targeted. Alpha e Shop also provides complete office and home interior design services through its own interior design team.

Implications and Further Actions

During the raids, VAT intelligence teams seized commercial documents related to the company's purchase and sales activities from its two showrooms. Further examination of these documents is underway, and legal action will be taken in accordance with relevant laws, the NBR said.

Alpha e Shop uses social media platforms like Facebook to attract customers and sells products through advertisements featuring social media influencers, a common practice among apparel brands. The detection of VAT evasion highlights the challenges faced by revenue authorities in monitoring and regulating online businesses, which often operate with more flexibility compared to traditional brick-and-mortar stores.

The case underscores the importance of stringent VAT compliance for online retailers to ensure fair competition and revenue generation for the government. It also reflects the growing scrutiny on e-commerce platforms, which have seen exponential growth in recent years, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
