Wall Street saw a retreat early Tuesday as oil prices pushed higher, driven by Houthi attacks targeting Saudi oil infrastructure. These attacks are part of an effort to gain control of the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a crucial conduit for Saudi crude after Iran blockaded the Strait of Hormuz. Brent oil futures were trading above $97 a barrel, reflecting the heightened tensions and supply concerns in the region.

About 10 minutes into trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.2 percent at 52,962.18. The broad-based S&P 500 dipped 0.2 percent to 7,701.95, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index also lost 0.2 percent at 26,464.68. The market's reaction underscores the sensitivity of stock prices to fluctuations in oil prices, which can impact global economic conditions and corporate earnings.

Investors are now looking ahead to consumer and wholesale inflation reports later in the week, which are considered key inputs for a Federal Reserve decision on interest rates scheduled for September 16. "Our forecast is that we're going to see a fairly big inflation increase this month, so we are expecting the Fed will raise rates," said FHN Financial's Chris Low. The anticipation of higher inflation and potential rate hikes adds another layer of uncertainty to the market.

Among individual companies, GE Aerospace saw a 0.7 percent rise after announcing it would buy Consolidated Precision Productions for $11.75 billion from private investment firms Warburg Pincus and Berkshire Partners. CPP is a manufacturer of castings, which are used to make aviation parts. This acquisition is expected to strengthen GE Aerospace's position in the aviation market, though the broader market trends kept the overall sentiment cautious.

The current market dynamics highlight the interconnectedness of global events, economic indicators, and corporate actions. As oil prices continue to be a volatile factor, investors remain vigilant about the potential impacts on inflation, interest rates, and overall economic stability. The upcoming inflation data will be crucial in shaping the Federal Reserve's monetary policy decisions, which in turn will influence market trends in the coming weeks.
