The Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) continued its downward trend, with the broad index DSEX falling 28.1 points to settle at 5,539, compared to 5,567 in the previous session. The market initially opened positively as investors engaged in bargain hunting following recent sharp declines. However, the early gains were short-lived as selling pressure intensified during mid-session, pushing the index into negative territory.

Market Dynamics and Sector Performance

Market turnover declined by 3.3 percent to Taka 5.9 billion from Taka 6.1 billion in the previous session. Textiles accounted for the highest share of turnover at 30.3 percent, followed by general insurance at 13.5 percent and pharmaceuticals at 9.2 percent. Most sectors posted negative returns, with textiles declining 1.7 percent, ceramics by 1.4 percent, and general insurance by 1.1 percent. Services were the only notable gainer, rising 0.4 percent.

Investor Sentiment and Market Outlook

Of the 395 issues traded, 245 declined, 80 advanced, and 70 remained unchanged. The persistent energy concerns and uncertainty ahead of the earnings season kept investors cautious. Despite the overall negative trend in Dhaka, the Chattogram Stock Exchange (CSE) ended in positive territory, with its selected indices CSCX and CASPI gaining 0.1 points and 8.2 points respectively.

The current market conditions reflect broad-based selling pressure and subdued investor confidence, which have outweighed any optimism over potential regulatory support. Investors remain cautious due to ongoing energy concerns and the uncertainty surrounding the upcoming earnings season. This cautious approach is evident in the market's performance, where most sectors posted negative returns, and the DSEX continued its downward trajectory.

The mixed performance between Dhaka and Chattogram exchanges highlights the varied investor sentiment across different markets. While Dhaka faces challenges due to broad-based selling and subdued confidence, Chattogram shows signs of resilience, possibly due to localized factors or different investor behavior. This divergence underscores the complexity of the current market environment and the need for careful navigation by investors.
