The Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) kicked off the week with a substantial decline, as the benchmark DSEX index dropped by 63.9 points, or 1.10 percent, to close at 5,722 points on Sunday. This sharp fall follows ongoing concerns over the energy crisis, which has led to factory shutdowns and increased reliance on costly alternative energy sources. Investors are increasingly worried that these issues will negatively impact industrial production and corporate earnings.

Despite the decline in the index, market turnover rose by 5.8 percent to Tk 710 crore from Tk 670 crore in the previous session. Selling pressure notably intensified during the final hour of trading. Textiles accounted for the highest share of turnover at 23.3 percent, followed by general insurance at 13.8 percent and pharmaceuticals at 11.9 percent.

Almost all sectors closed in the red, with financial institutions experiencing the highest decline of 2.5 percent. General insurance and life insurance sectors also saw declines of 2.1 percent and 1.9 percent, respectively. The only sector to post a gain was ceramics, which rose by 0.8 percent. Out of the 395 issues traded, 322 declined, 32 advanced, and 41 remained unchanged.

The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also closed lower, with its Selective Categories' Index (CSCX) declining by 35.1 points and the All Share Price Index (CASPI) falling by 61.7 points. The persistent energy crisis continues to cast a shadow over investor sentiment, leading to widespread declines across various sectors.
