Bangladesh has extended an invitation to entrepreneurs from China's Yunnan Province to invest in the country, underscoring its potential as a pivotal gateway connecting South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Chinese market. The invitation was extended during an 'Overseas Investment and Trade Environment Promotion Event' held at the General Association of Yunnan Entrepreneurs in Kunming. The event's theme, 'Connect to the South, Prosper through Open-cooperation,' aimed to highlight the mutual benefits of investment and trade between the two regions.
First Secretary (Commercial) of the Bangladesh Consulate General in Kunming, Ridwanur Rahman, presented a detailed overview titled 'Bangladesh as an Investment Destination.' He outlined various investment and trade opportunities available in Bangladesh, emphasizing the country's competitive workforce, availability of industrial land, robust energy facilities, full electricity coverage, and strategic geographical location as significant advantages for international investors.
Rahman highlighted Bangladesh's role as a bridge between South Asia, Southeast Asia, and China, offering Chinese investors an effective route to regional and international markets. He also drew attention to the proposed Kunming-Chattogram corridor, which could serve as a vital trade route connecting southwest China with the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean, thereby creating new opportunities for entrepreneurs from Yunnan.
Foreign investors in Bangladesh are offered 100 percent ownership, repatriation of capital and profits, and bilateral investment treaties with 34 countries, including China, provide a stable framework for investment. Rahman also mentioned the Chinese Economic and Industrial Zone under construction in Anwara, Chattogram, the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA)'s One Stop Service, export processing zones, hi-tech parks, and potential Public-Private Partnership (PPP) projects worth more than $4 billion.
Among the promising sectors for investment, Rahman identified readymade garments, pharmaceuticals, electronics, electric vehicles, agro-processing, renewable energy, logistics, and information technology services. He particularly noted opportunities for Chinese companies in solar power, energy storage technologies, and green construction.
Following the event, Yunnan entrepreneurs engaged in discussions with the Commercial Wing of the Bangladesh Consulate General to explore investment and trade expansion opportunities in Bangladesh. The consulate is actively working to strengthen trade and investment relations between Bangladesh and the Chinese provinces and regions of Yunnan, Sichuan, Chongqing, Guizhou, and Guangxi. This initiative is expected to enhance economic ties and foster mutual growth between the two nations.
