Jose Mourinho's return to Real Madrid as head coach got off to a dramatic start with a 2-1 victory over Espanyol in La Liga. Substitute Carlos Espi scored the winning goal in the 90th minute, ensuring a memorable beginning for Mourinho's second spell in charge of the club.

The match began promisingly for Madrid when Jude Bellingham, who had an impressive first season after joining from Borussia Dortmund, opened the scoring. Bellingham headed home a dangerous crossed free-kick from Arda Guler, giving Madrid an early lead.

However, Espanyol responded strongly and equalized in the 30th minute. Alex Calatrava slotted home a cut-back from Javi Hernandez after a well-executed team move, leveling the score and injecting tension into the match.

Despite the presence of superstars like Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior, Madrid struggled to break down Espanyol's defense. Mbappe, the top scorer in La Liga for the past two seasons, was not at his best, and Vinicius faced relentless fouling from Espanyol players.

Mourinho made several substitutions in the second half, bringing on new signings Yan Diomande and Marc Cucurella in an attempt to secure a winner. Madrid's persistence paid off when Espi, the lowest-profile of their summer purchases, capitalized on a loose ball in the box and fired home the decisive goal.

After the match, Mourinho praised Espanyol's performance, noting their cohesion despite not having any players at the World Cup. "I think that we deserved to win but that Espanyol didn't deserve to lose," he said. "They didn't have any players at the World Cup and have been working together for a long time, and you could see that."

Mourinho's return to Madrid comes after a tumultuous period for the club, with last season ending in chaos and no major trophies won. His immediate challenge will be to bring stability to the dressing room and end Barcelona's domestic dominance. The victory over Espanyol, though hard-fought, is a positive start to what Mourinho hopes will be a successful second stint at the club.
