Strasbourg, France, Aug 21, 2026 - Strasbourg has bolstered its defense with the acquisition of highly-rated German teenage defender Karim Coulibaly from Werder Bremen. The 19-year-old, who came through Hamburg's youth ranks, has signed a five-year contract with the Ligue 1 club. The deal, reportedly worth 20 million euros ($23 million), marks Strasbourg's most expensive signing of the transfer window. Coulibaly played a crucial role last season, helping Bremen stay in the Bundesliga with 27 appearances.

Coulibaly's arrival is part of a strategic move by Strasbourg to recruit promising young talents. The club, which is part of the BlueCo group that owns Chelsea, has been active in the transfer market this summer. Earlier this week, Strasbourg announced the signing of Costa Rican international defender Jeyland Mitchell from Austrian club Sturm Graz. These additions come as the club looks to strengthen its squad following several key departures.

Notable departures from Strasbourg this summer include Paraguay's World Cup star Julio Enciso and Ivorian Abdoul Ouattara, both of whom moved to Premier League club Ipswich. Additionally, Belgian international Diego Moreira joined AC Milan. These exits highlight the club's efforts to balance its squad while navigating financial constraints.

Strasbourg's financial situation has been under scrutiny, particularly after being fined 13 million euros by UEFA in June for breaching Financial Fair Play regulations. The club's management has been working to stabilize its financial standing while continuing to invest in young talent. The signing of Coulibaly and Mitchell reflects a commitment to building a competitive team for the future.

Coulibaly's journey from Hamburg's youth system to the professional ranks at Werder Bremen and now Strasbourg showcases his rapid development as a player. His ability to adapt and perform at a high level will be crucial as he integrates into Strasbourg's lineup. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the young defender contributes to the club's ambitions in Ligue 1 and beyond.
