Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has indicated that early parliamentary elections will likely be held in October, marking the strongest signal yet that a snap poll demanded by ongoing protests is imminent. Vucic told national broadcaster RTS that the elections would most likely take place on either October 18 or October 25. 'We will know in a few days,' he said, without providing further details.

Background of the Protests

The protests were sparked by the collapse of a train station canopy in Novi Sad in November last year, which killed 16 people. The tragedy became a symbol of perceived corruption in the country, leading to rolling demonstrations largely led by students. These protests have called for accountability and early elections, drawing approximately 180,000 people to the last major rally in Belgrade in May, according to an independent counting body.

Political Implications and Vucic's Future

With elections originally due in December 2027, Vucic has repeatedly promised to hold a snap vote but has avoided naming a specific date until now. The protests have been the largest since the fall of Slobodan Milosevic in 2000, posing the biggest challenge to Vucic's more than a decade in power. Notably, Vucic, a close ally of Moscow, recently announced he would resign as president when elections were called. His party colleagues have hinted that they would then support him as prime minister if they won, which would maintain Vucic as the central figure of power in the country.

The announcement of early elections is significant as it addresses the demands of the protest movement while also allowing Vucic to potentially transition into a new role, preserving his influence over Serbian politics. The snap elections are expected to be a critical test of public sentiment towards Vucic's administration and the protest movement's impact on the political landscape.
