LEEDS, United Kingdom – England's Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue made history by sharing both the wickets and the match ball as they bowled out Pakistan on the opening day of the first Test at Headingley on Wednesday. The two pacemen took five wickets each as Pakistan were dismissed for a meagre 171, marking a significant start to England's post-Bazball era under new captain Joe Root.

Unprecedented Achievement

Normally, a bowler who takes five wickets in a Test innings keeps the ball as a souvenir. However, with both Robinson and Tongue achieving this feat, they decided to split the ball. A member of the groundstaff sawed it in half, creating a unique keepsake for both players. Robinson expressed his excitement at the post-match press conference, highlighting the rarity of two players achieving this milestone in the same innings.

New Era for England Cricket

This match marks the beginning of a new chapter for England cricket, with Joe Root assuming the role of full-time captain following Ben Stokes's shock international retirement. Root, playing on his Yorkshire home ground, ended the day unbeaten on 37, with England at 112-2, trailing by just 59 runs. Robinson and Tongue's exceptional performance set the tone for what promises to be an exciting Test series.

Robinson's career-best seven wickets in an innings during England's first Test of the home season against New Zealand in June showcased his potential. Despite a knee injury that sidelined him for the second Test against New Zealand, Robinson's dedication to fitness and skill paid off on this historic day. Tongue, equally impressive, supported Robinson's efforts, ensuring Pakistan's early dismissal.

The shared match ball symbolizes not only the players' achievements but also the collaborative spirit within the England team. As England embarks on this new era, the performances of Robinson and Tongue provide a strong foundation for future success.
