Bangladesh's pace-bowling allrounder Mohammad Saifuddin believes the historic nine-wicket victory over Australia in Darwin could open the door to more opportunities for the country's cricketers to play in challenging overseas conditions. Bangladesh took a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series, securing the victory inside four days, their first Test win in Australia in 23 years. The result has drawn widespread praise internationally and instilled confidence among players beyond the national team.
Significance of the Victory
Saifuddin said the significance of the victory is huge. 'It's a truly extraordinary moment,' he told reporters in Mirpur today. 'We have won many matches before, but this Test win is special for us.' The allrounder emphasized that regular exposure to conditions in countries like Australia and England would be particularly valuable for Bangladesh's emerging players. 'Every player dreams of playing in the conditions of England and Australia. InshaAllah we hope to play more in these venues and in these countries,' he remarked.
Future Opportunities and Exposure
Saifuddin also hoped that Australia's defeat could encourage the team to invite Bangladesh for more matches across formats in future. 'Since we have defeated Australia in ODIs at home and in Tests on their soil, InshaAllah they may invite us better in the future,' he said. 'If we can play more matches on their soil, it will be good for our country's cricket.' He thanked those responsible for creating opportunities for the national team and said greater exposure would benefit future generations. 'Thanks to those who are creating this platform, so that the next generation gets more opportunities to play on Australian soil,' he opined.
Bangladesh's Darwin victory was built on a strong allround performance. Hasan Mahmud claimed nine wickets across the two innings, while Tanzid Hasan Tamim scored a century in the first innings and Mehidy Hasan Miraz made important contributions with both bat and ball. Saifuddin, however, stressed that the victory was the result of a collective effort. 'Everyone in every department gave their best,' he said. 'I don't want to name anyone in particular, everyone played amazingly. When they got the opportunity, everyone gave what the team needed.'
He singled out Hasan Mahmud for special praise, saying the fast bowler's recent form and experience playing county cricket in England had helped prepare him for demanding conditions. 'Hasan Mahmud has been in good shape for the last few years. Since he recently played county in English conditions, it is expected to play well,' Saifuddin said, adding Hasan is bowling exceptionally well at this moment and is in his best form. Competition for places in Bangladesh's pace attack is also intensifying, but Saifuddin said that should encourage players to work harder rather than create anxiety. 'The one who plays well will get the opportunity. There is nothing to worry about, but we have to increase our work mentality,' he said.
Bangladesh now have an opportunity to secure a historic series victory, with the second and final Test scheduled to begin in Mackay on August 22. Saifuddin believes that Australia would be determined to respond after the heavy defeat but remained optimistic about Bangladesh's chances. 'It is a great opportunity to win the series against Australia on their soil. Although it will not be easy, because Australia will try to make a comeback with their best,' he said. 'Still, since we are all in good shape, I hope something good will happen.'
