Bangladesh allrounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz has called on his team to replicate their heroics from the first Test as they prepare for the second and final Test against Australia in Mackay, starting on August 22. After securing a dominant nine-wicket victory in the first Test inside four days, Bangladesh had a day of leisure in Darwin, which could have been the fifth and final day of the Test. The team is set to fly to Mackay for the second Test, where Miraz emphasized the importance of carefully assessing the conditions, similar to their approach in the first Test.
Mackay will host its first-ever Test match, featuring Bangladesh and Australia, making the pitch unfamiliar even for the hosts. "Need to think of how to perform in these conditions," Miraz said. "We batted well and bowled well at the right times (in the first Test)."
Hasan Mahmud's six-wicket haul in the first innings marked the first-ever five-wicket haul by a Bangladeshi bowler on Australian soil, while opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim etched his name into the record books by becoming the first Bangladeshi batter to hit a century Down Under. Miraz also played a crucial role, scoring 65 runs in the first innings and taking 5-65 in the second innings. His contributions helped Bangladesh secure a 228-run lead and eventually a nine-wicket victory.
Miraz praised the team's all-round performance and emphasized the importance of belief. "Belief, character, and contributions from across the team were crucial to their impressive victory over Australia," he said. He also commended Najmul Hossain Shanto's leadership, highlighting the captain's good decision-making and his valuable 84 runs in the first innings.
The conditions in Darwin favored the spinners, with Miraz noting that the footmarks helped. He also mentioned his century in the practice match, which boosted his confidence ahead of the Test. "The century in the practice match, no doubt, enhanced my confidence to bat well here," Miraz said.
Back home, the victory has generated immense pride. "I think everybody is happy. They are very proud. It's a proud moment," Miraz said, thanking the supporters who traveled to watch Bangladesh and backed the team throughout the match. The significance of this victory for Bangladesh cannot be overstated, as it marks a historic moment in the country's cricketing history.
