Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has made it clear that despite having a realistic chance of reaching the World Test Championship (WTC) final, his immediate focus is on maintaining good form in the upcoming Test against Australia. Bangladesh currently leads the two-match series 1-0 following a significant nine-wicket victory in the first Test in Darwin. This win not only marked Bangladesh's first Test victory on Australian soil in 23 years but also propelled them to fourth place in the WTC standings with a points percentage of 66.67.
Historic Victory and WTC Standings
The victory was a historic moment for Bangladesh cricket, with notable performances including a century by Tanzid Hasan Tamim and six wickets by Hasan Mahmud. Australia were bowled out for 198 in the first innings, and despite a stronger second innings total of 284, they were unable to prevent Bangladesh from chasing down the target of 57 with the loss of only one wicket. This win has significantly boosted Bangladesh's points percentage from 58.33 to 66.67, placing them among the top four teams in the WTC table.
Shanto's Strategic Focus
Despite the potential to qualify for the WTC final, Shanto is urging his team to remain grounded. "If you look at the points table, there is definitely a chance. However, as a captain, I always say one thing in the dressing room: don't think too far ahead," Shanto said during the post-match press conference. He emphasized the importance of focusing on the immediate task at hand—playing well in the current series. "How can we play this series or this Test well, that is important. It was a very big win, the best win in the country's history. However, we are still not an average world team. The Test team is slowly moving towards a good place. There is an opportunity, and we have to use this opportunity."
Bangladesh's next challenge is the second and final Test against Australia, scheduled to begin on August 22 at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay. This match will be crucial not only for series bragging rights but also for further solidifying their position in the WTC standings. Australia remains at the top of the WTC table with 77.78 percentage points, followed by South Africa and New Zealand. India is currently fifth with 48.15 points, behind Bangladesh. The outcome of the upcoming Test will be pivotal in determining the final WTC rankings.
