Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury said the government is working to advance the country through proper management of water resources and development of canals and wetlands. He made the remarks as the chief guest during the inauguration ceremony of the National Fisheries Week with the theme 'A self-reliant country through silver fish, Bangladesh first.' The event was jointly organized by the Department of Fisheries (DoF) and Khulna District Administration.

Roy Chowdhury highlighted Bangladesh's natural resources and scenic beauty, noting the nation's reputation as a 'fish and rice' country. He emphasized the importance of managing water resources effectively to support agricultural and fisheries sectors, which are vital for the country's food security and economic development.
Call for Collective Efforts
The minister called upon various stakeholders, including farmers, blacksmiths, potters, weavers, and fishermen, to work together to achieve self-sufficiency in every sector. He stressed the need to reduce imports by increasing domestic production, particularly in the fisheries sector, to meet the country's demand and earn foreign currency through exports.
Event Highlights
The inauguration ceremony included a discussion and award-giving ceremony held at the conference room of the Khulna Deputy Commissioner’s office. Khulna Deputy Commissioner Hoore Jannat presided over the programme, with Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs Md Billal Hossain Khan, Director of the Divisional Fisheries Office Md Jahangir Alam, and Police Superintendent of the Range DIG Office Md Sajjadur Rahman Russell attending as special guests.
District Fisheries Officer Md Badruzzaman delivered the welcome address. The event was attended by officials from government and private organizations, fish farmers, fishermen, representatives of fish-exporting companies, and representatives of fish-feed producers and traders’ associations. The chief guest also handed over crests to two successful fish farmers in recognition of their contributions. A colourful procession marked the beginning of Fisheries Week, led by the minister from the Circuit House premises.
