Hurricane Lala intensified into a Category 1 hurricane, striking Hawaii's Big Island with heavy rain and strong winds. The storm brought significant flooding and power outages, affecting over 20,000 customers. Forecasters warned of life-threatening conditions, including mudslides and large, dangerous waves.
Lala generated winds of up to 75 miles per hour (120 kilometers per hour) and was expected to dump 10 to 20 inches (25 to 50 cm) of rain on the Big Island, with some areas potentially receiving up to 25 inches. The US National Hurricane Center issued warnings about the risks of flooding and mudslides, particularly in areas with steep terrain.
A hurricane warning was in effect for Hawaii County, covering the Big Island, while a tropical storm warning was issued for the state's other major islands: Maui, Molokai, Kahoolawe, Lanai, Oahu, Kauai, and Niihau. Governor Josh Green declared a state of emergency, emphasizing the need for sufficient resources to manage the storm's impacts.
Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi had prepared for the storm by urging residents to take necessary precautions. The state's emergency management agency recommended clearing gutters and drains, moving valuables, sealing gaps in doors, and removing threatening tree limbs. Residents were seen stocking up on gasoline in anticipation of the storm.
Hawaii last experienced a major hurricane in 1992 when Hurricane Iniki caused significant damage and multiple fatalities. The current storm follows Hurricane Fausto, which weakened before reaching the islands last month. The formation of a powerful El Nino in the central equatorial Pacific Ocean has increased the likelihood of extreme weather events.
El Nino, characterized by unusually warm sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, tends to enhance hurricane activity in the Pacific while reducing it in the Atlantic. Climate change exacerbates El Nino's impacts by providing more energy and moisture for extreme weather events. This underscores the importance of preparedness and resilience in the face of such natural disasters.
