Sebastian Coe, the mastermind behind the highly successful 2012 London Olympics, has urged the organizers of the upcoming Los Angeles Olympics in 2028 to collaborate closely with the US government. Coe, who now heads World Athletics, emphasized the importance of maintaining good working relationships with government officials, including prime ministers and other key political figures. He stressed that while it is crucial to have politicians involved, they should not be allowed to influence operational decisions.

Coe highlighted the need for the LA28 local organizing committee to establish strong connections with various US government ministries, such as Treasury, Defense, and Homeland Security. He noted that the safety and success of the Games largely depend on these political relationships, though he cautioned against allowing external political interference to dictate the operational aspects of the event.

Drawing from his experience with the London Olympics, Coe advised keeping politicians "on the bus" but not "anywhere near the steering wheel." He believes that the resilience and robust nature of the sport itself are essential in mitigating external pressures and maintaining the integrity of the Games.

The advice comes in the context of recent concerns over the relationship between US President Donald Trump and FIFA head Gianni Infantino during the co-hosted Football World Cup. Infantino's frequent visits to the White House and controversial decisions, such as awarding Trump a FIFA peace prize and reversing a red card for US player Folarin Balogun, raised eyebrows and highlighted the potential for political influence in sports events.

Coe's comments also follow the election of former Zimbabwean swimmer Kirsty Coventry as the new president of the International Olympic Committee. Coventry, who has experience dealing with high-profile and challenging individuals, expressed confidence in the ability of the LA Olympics organizers and the IOC to navigate potential pitfalls, including visa issues that affected the World Cup.

For Bangladeshi readers, the successful execution of the LA Olympics is of interest as it sets a global standard for future events, including potential hosting opportunities for countries like Bangladesh. The emphasis on robust political relationships and operational independence underscores the importance of careful planning and collaboration in international sports events.
