In a significant crackdown on online gambling, a special team of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) arrested three individuals in separate drives across Rajshahi city. The arrests were made following drives conducted in the Hargram Charkhutar Mor area under Kashiadanga Police Station and the Dashpukur ID Baganpara area under Rajpara Police Station. During the operations, two mobile phones used for operating and playing online gambling were seized from the suspects.

Arrest Details

The first arrest was made in the Hargram Charkhutar Mor area, where Raja Hossain, 45, son of late Emdadul Haque of Golzarbag Guripara village, and Year Latif Chanchal, 30, son of late Anwar Hossain of Gopalpur village under Godagari Police Station, were apprehended. In the second operation, Md. Jitu, 21, son of late Nur Alam Joni of the same village, was arrested in the Dashpukur ID Baganpara area.

Legal Action and Background

Cases have been filed against the arrested individuals under the Gambling Prevention Act, 2026 at the respective police stations. Online gambling has become a growing concern in Bangladesh, with authorities increasingly cracking down on such activities to maintain law and order and protect citizens from the adverse effects of gambling.

The Gambling Prevention Act, 2026, was enacted to curb the proliferation of gambling activities, both online and offline. The act aims to prevent the social and economic harm caused by gambling, which can lead to financial ruin, addiction, and associated criminal activities. The recent arrests underscore the government's commitment to enforcing this law and ensuring public safety.

Online gambling poses significant risks to individuals, particularly young people who may be more susceptible to its addictive nature. The ease of access and anonymity provided by the internet can lead to impulsive behavior and severe consequences. By taking proactive measures, law enforcement agencies aim to mitigate these risks and promote a safer environment for all citizens.
