At least eight workers were killed and several others injured after being exposed to toxic gas from a leaking tank of a decommissioned LNG ship at Ferdous Steel Ship Recycling Industries in Sitakunda upazila on August 14, 2026. The incident occurred around 9am, leading to immediate medical attention for the affected workers. Deputy Inspector General Mohammad Mahbubul Hasan confirmed the workers died from toxic gas emissions from the ship. The cause of the gas emission and safety measures in place are under investigation.
Key Details of the Incident
The incident was confirmed by Officer-in-Charge Md Mohinul Islam of Sitakunda Police Station, who stated that police rushed to the shipbreaking yard upon receiving information about the accident. Al Mamun, in-charge of Kumira Fire Service Station, reported that three workers were initially found dead at the yard. Five others died after being taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital. Nurul Alam Ashek, in-charge of the CMC Hospital Police Outpost, confirmed that six injured workers were admitted to the hospital, five of whom were later declared dead.
Ferdouse Wahid, managing partner of the shipyard, mentioned that three workers died at the spot and several others were injured. Fire service personnel launched rescue operations after being informed of the incident. Yard manager Mohammad Yusuf stated that operations at the yard were suspended for the day following the incident. The identities of four deceased workers were confirmed as Sunny Jaldas, 22, Palash Jaldas, 27, and brothers Mansur Ali, 40, and Nasir Uddin, 38, all residents of the Bhatiari area.
