The United States has reiterated its support for Japan's claim over the Northern Territories, known as the Kuril Islands in Russia, following a visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin. US Ambassador to Tokyo George Glass emphasized the US's unwavering stance in backing Japan's sovereignty, calling the islands historically and legally part of Japan.
In a statement on X, Glass condemned any actions that threaten the peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. Putin's visit marks the first by a Russian president since 2010, reigniting tensions between Russia and Japan over the disputed territories seized by the Soviet Union in 1945.
