Israel has officially reopened the West Bank settlement of Ganim, marking a significant policy shift by the current government towards accelerated settlement expansion. This move, which took place on Thursday, comes over 20 years after Israel withdrew from the area under former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's disengagement plan in 2005.
A Symbol of Policy Shift
The reopening of Ganim, one of four settlements evacuated in 2005, is emblematic of the current government's strategy to rapidly expand settlements in the occupied West Bank. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz emphasized this at the ceremony, stating, 'Here, this is the Land of Israel. Here, we are staying forever.'
About two dozen pre-fabricated homes have already been installed in Ganim, with ongoing construction to accommodate more residents. The move is part of a broader trend under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government, which has seen a surge in settlement construction.
Palestinian Concerns and Israeli Actions
Palestinians living nearby fear that the construction of Ganim will exacerbate their living conditions and could lead to displacement. The Israeli army has demolished stores and blocked dirt roads to Palestinian communities in the area, further heightening tensions.
The reoccupation of Ganim, Sa-Nur, and Homesh settlements is seen as a direct challenge to international law, which considers Israeli settlements in the West Bank illegal. This move has also coincided with a dramatic increase in violence against Palestinians by Israeli settlers.
Since the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas from the Gaza Strip, incidents of violence against Palestinians have escalated, complicating the already tense situation in the region.
