Bangladesh is facing a devastating measles outbreak, with five more children succumbing to suspected measles in the past 24 hours, raising the death toll to 791 since March 15. The surge in cases has placed immense strain on the country's healthcare system, with hospitals overwhelmed by the influx of patients.
Current Situation
The latest figures from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) show a grim picture. In the past day alone, 951 suspected measles cases were reported, bringing the total number of suspected cases since the outbreak began on March 15 to 140,076. A total of 74 confirmed measles cases were reported, bringing the number of confirmed cases to 17,543. The outbreak has also led to the hospitalization of 121,908 suspected measles patients, with 117,690 patients recovering and being discharged from hospitals.
Despite the high number of suspected cases, no deaths from confirmed measles were reported in the past 24 hours. However, 99 deaths from confirmed measles have been reported since March 15. The situation is particularly concerning for children, with the majority of fatalities being under the age of five.
