In recent days, Bangladesh has seen a troubling rise in dengue infections. Authorities reported 726 new cases overnight, bringing the total number of infections this year to 20,071. The disease has already claimed 61 lives this year, with cases spreading across multiple regions.
According to a statement from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the highest number of new cases were recorded in Dhaka, with 186 cases between the Dhaka South City Corporation and Dhaka North City Corporation areas. Other regions also saw significant numbers, including 172 cases in Rangpur, 107 in Khulna, and 101 in Chattogram.
Last year, the country witnessed 413 dengue-related deaths and 102,861 infections. In 2024, the dengue outbreak was even more severe, with 575 deaths and 101,214 infections. Health officials are concerned that this year could surpass those grim statistics.
Public health experts are urging residents to take preventive measures, such as eliminating standing water where mosquitoes breed, using mosquito repellents, and wearing protective clothing. The government is also increasing efforts to control the spread, including fogging and public awareness campaigns.
The escalating dengue cases have prompted health officials to call for heightened vigilance and community participation in prevention efforts. They warn that without significant action, the number of infections and deaths could continue to rise.
