In a significant meeting on August 13, 2026, Defence Adviser Brigadier General (retd) Dr AKM Shamsul Islam highlighted the necessity of enhancing awareness and understanding of international humanitarian law (IHL) within Bangladesh. He stressed that IHL plays a crucial role in safeguarding human dignity and protecting lives during armed conflicts.

Protection of Vulnerable Groups

During the meeting with Nicolas Paul Albin Fleury, Head of Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Bangladesh, both parties focused on the protection of civilians, women, children, the wounded, medical personnel, humanitarian workers, and journalists in conflict zones. They emphasized the need to ensure these groups are safeguarded during military operations.

Education and Training

The discussions also touched upon incorporating practical lessons, case studies, seminars, and trainer-development programs into military education and training to better equip armed forces with the knowledge of IHL. The importance of media and public engagement in raising awareness about IHL principles was also underscored.

Modern Technology and Legal Considerations

The meeting highlighted the need to consider humanitarian and legal aspects in the use of modern technologies, such as artificial intelligence, drones, and cyber activities.
