In a bid to enhance maritime safety and prevent illegal activities, a joint operation was conducted at the outer anchorage of Chattogram Port and along the Karnaphuli Channel. The operation, which involved the Chattogram Port Authority (CPA), Bangladesh Navy, and Coast Guard, was aimed at curbing illegal stockpiling, the use of vessels as floating warehouses, and ensuring safe navigation.
Crackdown on Illegal Activities
During the operation, 28 individuals were apprehended for allegedly placing illegal fishing nets in the navigational channel. Of these, 24 were sentenced to one month in jail by a magistrate, according to Syed Refayet Hamim, the CPA Secretary. The authorities are intensifying surveillance activities to prevent long-term anchoring of vessels, which could create artificial shortages and disrupt the supply of goods.
Community Awareness and Legal Action
To raise awareness among local residents, leaflets were distributed to discourage the placement of illegal nets in the navigational channel. Syed Refayet Hamim emphasized that strict legal measures will be taken against any attempts to hoard goods by using vessels as floating warehouses in the outer anchorage.
