In a heartbreaking incident, two students from the 24th batch of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) drowned in a pond on campus today. The victims, Arnab Chanda, a 22-year-old computer science student, and Shanto Dev, a 23-year-old electrical engineering student, both from Sylhet district, were found unresponsive in the water. They had gone to the pond to bathe with friends after a game of football. Despite efforts to revive them, both students were pronounced dead at Evercare Hospital in Chattogram.
The incident took place near Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall. Officer-in-Charge of Raozan Police Station, Saiful Islam, confirmed the fatalities and stated that legal proceedings are ongoing. This is the second such incident at the same pond in recent months, as another student drowned there on July 28.
According to Professor Saiful Islam, the director of the Student Welfare Department at CUET, the bodies of the deceased are at the hospital and their families have been informed. He added that arrangements will be made in accordance with the families' wishes. The university community is in mourning, reflecting on the sudden loss of two promising young engineers.
Eyewitnesses reported that Arnab and Shanto ventured into deeper waters while swimming and unfortunately drowned. They were rescued from the pond and rushed to the hospital, but the doctors were unable to save them. This tragic event has cast a shadow over the campus, raising questions about safety measures around the pond.
The university is reviewing safety protocols and may implement new measures to prevent such incidents in the future. The loss of these students has deeply affected their peers and faculty, underscoring the need for enhanced safety awareness and precautions on campus.
