Bangladesh is grappling with a severe gas and electricity crisis, but the government is taking significant steps to address the situation, according to State Minister for Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources, Aninda Islam Amit. During a briefing at the Bangladesh Secretariat, Amit explained the challenges facing the nation's energy sector.
Current Challenges
Amit explained that the ongoing crisis is primarily due to two issues. The first is the inability to unload LNG at the Summit Terminal because of adverse weather conditions in the Bay of Bengal. The second is the Excelerate Energy's Terminal operating at only 50% capacity due to technical faults.
Expressing regret over the severe public suffering caused by these issues, Amit assured that the government is working tirelessly to resolve the crisis. He mentioned that as soon as weather conditions return to normal, the gas supply situation should improve. The government has also reached out to Malaysian authorities for cooperation to ensure a steady gas supply.
Government Initiatives
Amit detailed the various measures being taken to tackle the crisis. These include seeking experts' opinions and consulting with businesspeople to address the energy shortage. A Bangladesh delegation also visited Malaysia to discuss potential gas supply collaborations.
The government is also considering the import of LNG through ISO tanks, although this depends on the availability of the required ISO tanks in the market. Amit emphasized that while increasing domestic gas production is a long-term issue, the government is exploring all possible alternatives to alleviate the current crisis.
The government's efforts to seek external cooperation and internal consultations reflect its commitment to resolving the energy crisis. The state minister acknowledged that past policy decisions by previous governments have contributed to the current situation, but assured that the government is taking all necessary steps to bring relief to the public.
