Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is expected to inaugurate a new 15-storey building with 500 additional beds at the National Institute of Neurosciences & Hospital (NINS) tomorrow. The construction of the new building is complete, and most equipment has been installed. Once inaugurated, the total number of beds at the hospital will increase to 1,000, making it the largest specialised neurological treatment centre in the country.
State-of-the-Art Facilities
The new building, known as NINS Unit-2, features three basements and 12 floors above ground. It includes wards, operation theatres, diagnostic units, 40 ICU beds, 24 post-operative beds, and 112 cabins. The hospital now has a central AC system, a first for any government medical centre in the country. Additionally, there is a 100-bed specialised trauma unit for road accident and fall victims, equipped with a 24-hour OT facility and two modular OTs using German technology.
Enhanced Patient Care
The new building is designed to improve patient care with features such as escalators for easy patient transfer, a 40-bed ICU, a 20-bed HDU, 62 ventilators, a cathlab, two MRI and two CT scan machines, a modern autoclave machine, a solid waste disposal system, and a separate oxygen plant system. NINS Director Prof Dr Mohammad Nuruzzaman Khan highlighted that the inauguration will allow the hospital to provide world-class services to more patients, reducing the shortage of beds and ensuring no patient is turned away.
Dr Nuruzzaman noted that the foundation stone of NINS was laid by the then Prime Minister, late Begum Khaleda Zia, on October 23, 2006, with the aim of expanding medical services for neuro patients. The inauguration of the new building by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on his mother's birthday is seen as a significant achievement and a matter of pride for the hospital.
