Iran's judiciary has executed a man who was convicted of running over several police officers with his car during anti-government protests in January. Shahram Sadeghi was executed on Sunday, according to the judiciary's Mizan Online website. He was sentenced to death for an operational action in support of the Zionist regime and the United States.
The incident occurred on January 8 in Karaj, west of Tehran, where Sadeghi reportedly ran over police officers, wounding seven of them. The anti-government demonstrations, which peaked on January 8 and 9, were initially sparked by the high cost of living but evolved into widespread protests against the government.
Iranian authorities have attributed the violence during the protests to 'terrorist acts' orchestrated by the United States and Israel. In contrast, rights groups based abroad claim that security forces fired on protesters. The number of executions in Iran has increased since the start of the Middle East war, which began on February 28 with US-Israeli strikes against Iran.
Last year, Iran executed at least 1,639 people, the highest number since 1989, according to Iran Human Rights, an NGO based in Norway, and Together Against the Death Penalty (ECPM), headquartered in Paris. Amnesty International reports that Iran conducts the second-highest number of executions globally, after China.
The execution of Sadeghi is part of a broader crackdown on dissent in Iran. The government has faced international criticism for its handling of the protests and the subsequent executions. Human rights organizations continue to call for an end to the death penalty in Iran.
