Rajshahi police have submitted investigation reports in 21 of the 30 cases filed following the 2024 July Uprising. The remaining investigations are ongoing, with efforts to complete them within the next one to two months. The movement, which saw students defying bullets and death, culminated in tragic deaths and injuries. Key figures, including former city mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton and Metropolitan Awami League General Secretary Dablu Sarkar, have been named in several cases. The murder cases of students Sakib Anjum and Ali Raihan have been sent to the International Crimes Tribunal.
Investigation Details
The investigations are based on substantial evidence to avoid harassing innocent individuals. Eyewitnesses, video footage, and forensic evidence are being gathered, though some witnesses are hesitant due to security concerns. In most cases, leaders and activists of the then Awami League and its associate organizations have been named as accused.
Legal Proceedings
Charge sheets have been filed against more than a hundred people in some sensational murder cases. Around 2,500 accused have been charged, with over 600 arrested. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend those still at large. Judicial activities have been delayed due to vacant judicial posts, but hearings are currently being held according to the cause list.
Family Statements
Families of the victims have called for swift justice. Sakib Anjum's father, Mainul Islam, and mother, Rokeya Khatun, emphasized the need for legal justice. Ali Raihan's brother, Rana Islam, highlighted the movement's goal of establishing people's rights. Mehedi Sojib, then coordinator of Rajshahi University, stressed the importance of timely justice to honor the sacrifices made.
