The United States remained Bangladesh’s largest single-country market for RMG exports during the July-August period.

Export Figures and Trends

The two-month earnings accounted for 20.8 percent of the US$7,744.61 million Bangladesh earned from RMG exports to the US in the whole of FY26. The latest figures show that Bangladesh earned an average of US$806.46 million per month from RMG exports to the US during July-August of FY27. The corresponding monthly average based on the full-year FY2025-26 earnings stood at US$645.38 million. Thus, the current monthly average in FY27 remains about 25.65% higher than the previous fiscal year’s full-year monthly average.

Monthly Performance

The growth, however, remained uneven across the first two months. RMG exports to the US declined marginally by 0.18 percent year-on-year in July, while August shipments recorded a strong 25.65 percent increase, according to EPB. The July figure stood at US$795.79 million, while August earnings reached about US$817.13 million.

Industry Insights

Talking to BSS, former director of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Mohiuddin Rubel said the US market’s performance would remain important for Bangladesh’s apparel sector as exporters seek to sustain growth amid a challenging global trading environment. The ready-made garment sector is a critical component of Bangladesh's economy, contributing significantly to employment and foreign exchange earnings.

Why This Matters for Bangladesh

The growth in RMG exports to the US is a positive indicator for Bangladesh's economy, especially given the challenges posed by the global trading environment. The US market's performance is crucial for the sustainability of Bangladesh's apparel sector, which is a major source of employment and foreign exchange earnings for the country.
