In the history of the July Uprising, August 4, 2026, was one of the most important and decisive days. Unprecedented participation from students, people, teachers, guardians, and professionals was witnessed on the streets in response to the call for a non-cooperation movement. This day solidified the determination to topple the government, with Rajshahi emerging as a strong focal point of the movement. The events of August 4 laid the foundation for the government's fall on August 5. The courage, unity, and mass participation during the non-cooperation movement were crucial in achieving this victory. Rajshahi played a significant role in this historic chapter.

Mass Participation and Protests

On August 4, protests began in the morning at the main gate of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET). The movement quickly gained momentum as teachers and students from Rajshahi University, Rajshahi College, New Government Degree College, and other institutions joined in, along with guardians, professionals, and people from all walks of life. The protesters carried national flags, shrouds, and banners, echoing slogans of solidarity and resistance.

Solidarity and Clashes

Expressing solidarity with the students, Professor Saleh Hasan Naqib of Rajshahi University emphasized the importance of maintaining restraint while moving forward. Dr. Md Faridul Islam, Vice-Chancellor of Rajshahi University, highlighted the loss of confidence in the government and the teaching community's support for the students' demands. As the protest procession moved through the Talaimari area, clashes broke out between protesters and police, resulting in injuries and hospital admissions.

The Turning Point

Mehedi Sajib, former coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, recalled that August 4 changed the course of the movement. Despite internet shutdowns, the central program was successfully implemented through alternative coordination. The united presence of people in Rajshahi gave new momentum to the movement, leading to final preparations for the 'March to Dhaka' program. The next day, the government fell through a mass uprising, with the foundation of that victory laid on August 4.
