Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, today accused the currently banned Awami League of bringing disaster to Bangladesh. He claimed that the party stole the country's reserves and transferred them to the Philippines. The Speaker made these remarks as the chief guest at an exchange of views with professionals and people from different walks of life, organised by Tazumuddin Upazila BNP at the Upazila Parishad auditorium. The event took place around 5:30pm today.
Ahmad also alleged that the Awami League established a torture cell known as 'Aynaghar,' where innocent people were tortured. He further stated that Jamaat leader Ahmed Bin Quasem was detained and tortured for eight years, while many others, including Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, were victims of judicial killings. These accusations were made in the context of the current political climate, where the Awami League's activities are banned.
The Speaker criticised the ousted Awami League government for giving India maximum benefits while failing to prevent the killing of Bangladeshis along the border. He assured the people of Tazumuddin upazila that the area would be turned into a municipality and pledged various development initiatives, including improvement of roads and highways.
Ahmad, who recalled his military career, mentioned that he was the first person from Lalmohan to join the army and that Major Ziaur Rahman (Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman) was his instructor. He contrasted his own career with the current practices of some MPs, stating, 'I never tried to accumulate wealth, whereas now many MPs make thousands of crores of taka.' He urged the people to remain committed to preserving Bangladesh's reputation.
The event was moderated by Tazumuddin Upazila BNP General Secretary Omar Asad Rintu, with President Golam Mostafa Mintu in the chair. Local BNP leaders and activists, including members of affiliated organisations, were present.
