Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon today called for making Jatiya Sangsad the main center of politics to properly evaluate the bloodstain sacrifices of all democratic movements, including the July Uprising and the 1971 Great Liberation War. He criticized the tendency to artificially take politics out of parliament, emphasizing the need to keep political debate within democratic culture and glorify the political process.

Swapon's Vision for Parliamentary Democracy

Swapon highlighted the importance of making the parliament effective and vibrant. He stated that even 55 years after the Liberation War, the country still faces challenges in ensuring the right to vote, which is a matter of shame and self-criticism. He noted that the current government, led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, is committed to implementing the July Charter through the elected parliament.

Challenges and Commitments

The minister expressed concern over attempts to take politics to the streets or outside the parliament, even when remembering the martyrs. He condemned the use of social media for spreading obscenities and conspiracies, which go beyond common values. Swapon emphasized that the sacrifice of the martyrs will be meaningful only when good governance is ensured by keeping all democratic forces united.
