President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today stressed the importance of firmly establishing democracy in Bangladesh to ensure the rights and dignity of people from all communities, irrespective of religion or caste. He made these remarks during a courtesy call by a 15-member delegation of Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad at Bangabhaban.
The delegation, led by Parishad’s President Basudev Dhar and General Secretary Santosh Sharma, conveyed their heartfelt congratulations to the President for assuming office. President Alamgir highlighted that regular practice of democracy and strengthening democratic institutions are essential for the country’s development and progress.
"When democratic values are weakened, it becomes difficult to protect the country's independence, sovereignty and the rights of the people," the President stated. He called upon people of all religions and communities to build a non-communal, democratic, justice-based, and humane Bangladesh unitedly.
Santosh Sharma thanked the government for its cooperation in ensuring peaceful and orderly observance of various religious festivals of the Hindu community, including Janmashtami and Rath Yatra. He expressed satisfaction with the government initiatives to protect the rights and dignity of the Hindu community.
The leaders of the Parishad stressed the need for ensuring security, access to justice, and equal rights for citizens of all religions and communities, including the Hindu community. They invited the President to be present at the puja mandap at Dhakeshwari National Temple during the upcoming Durga Puja and exchange greetings with devotees.
President Alamgir accepted the invitation and thanked the delegation. He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring fair opportunities for all citizens based on merit, just rights, and equality. He expressed hope that the upcoming Durga Puja would be held in a festive, peaceful, and cordial atmosphere, further strengthening communal harmony in the country.
The meeting was attended by senior officials from the President's Office. The President’s remarks underscore the significance of democracy in protecting the rights and dignity of all communities in Bangladesh, fostering a united and harmonious society.
