At the BRICS summit held in New Delhi, President Xi Jinping announced China's initiative to establish an "open-source zone for artificial intelligence" for the BRICS nations. This proposal is part of Xi's broader "initiative on open-source and inclusive AI," which aims to foster cooperation in the development and application of large language models among BRICS countries. The initiative also includes plans for specialized research and training on AI, with the ultimate goal of building an open ecosystem for AI.
Chinese AI companies are renowned for producing world-leading open-source AI models, where the underlying code is accessible for adaptation by users. This contrasts with the closed-door approaches favored by many US developers. Xi's proposal reflects China's commitment to promoting open-source technology and collaborative development in the AI sector.
The BRICS bloc, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, was formed in 2009 as a forum for major emerging economies seeking greater influence in global institutions dominated by Western powers. The bloc has since expanded to include six additional countries, making it an 11-nation group. The proposed AI initiative is expected to enhance the technological capabilities and collaborative efforts among these nations.
In addition to the open-source AI zone, Xi called for the establishment of a "broad, consensus-based global AI governance framework." This call comes amid growing concerns about the rapid development of AI technology and the need for international cooperation to ensure its safe and ethical use. Xi is expected to discuss AI governance with US President Donald Trump during his upcoming visit to the United States.
