John Ternus Succeeds Tim Cook as Apple CEO, Set to Lead in AI Era

John Ternus has officially assumed the role of Apple's CEO, marking the end of Tim Cook's 15-year tenure. Ternus, who joined Apple in 2001 and most recently served as senior vice president of hardware engineering, now faces the dual challenges of advancing Apple's artificial intelligence capabilities and navigating the company's complex geopolitical landscape. His first major test will be the upcoming iPhone event on September 9, where Apple is expected to unveil its first foldable smartphone.

Ternus' appointment comes at a pivotal moment for Apple. While the company continues to dominate the smartphone market, it has been criticized for lagging behind competitors in artificial intelligence. Analysts predict that Ternus will focus on leveraging his expertise in hardware innovation to bridge this gap. Dan Ives, partner and senior managing director at Yorkville Ives & Co., noted, 'There's no reason to fix what's already working.' He expects Ternus to concentrate on hardware innovation while maintaining Cook's established supply chain.

One of Ternus' immediate challenges will be balancing Apple's reliance on China for manufacturing with the increasing political pressure from the White House. Under Cook, Apple diversified its supply chain by shifting some production to India and Vietnam, but China remains a critical component. The company now faces demands from former President Donald Trump to manufacture iPhones in the United States, a move that could complicate its global operations.

Ternus' transition to CEO also marks a shift in leadership style. While he is well-known within Apple for his technical prowess, his ability to navigate the geopolitical and corporate challenges ahead remains uncertain. Carolina Milanesi, an analyst at Creative Strategies, observed, 'Even people that know him now don't know him as a CEO. Once you're CEO, things change. Your responsibility is bigger, your power is bigger. You're dancing a different kind of dance.'

Financially, Ternus' base salary will be $3 million, the same as Cook's when he became CEO. However, stock options could increase his total compensation to $58 million in his first year. Cook, who is transitioning to the role of executive chairman, will see his salary decrease to $2 million, with total compensation potentially reaching $47 million over the next year.

The upcoming iPhone event will serve as an early indicator of Ternus' leadership. Expected to feature Apple's first foldable smartphone, the event will be a significant moment for the new CEO. As Milanesi put it, 'This is a moment that they created for him.' The success of this launch could set the tone for Ternus' tenure at the helm of one of the world's most valuable companies.

For Bangladeshi readers, Apple's innovations, including potential advancements in AI and foldable technology, could influence local consumer preferences and tech industry trends. As Apple continues to expand its global footprint, the decisions made under Ternus' leadership will likely have ripple effects in markets around the world, including Bangladesh.
