Google's AI assistant, Gemini, has achieved a remarkable milestone by surpassing one billion monthly users, according to an announcement by CEO Sundar Pichai. This achievement comes shortly after a significant reorganization of Google's AI division. Gemini is now Google's fastest-growing product and the 14th to reach a billion users. The milestone reflects Google's ongoing integration of AI across its various services, from search and Gmail to Google Maps and YouTube.
Despite this growth, Google faces challenges as its new flagship model, Gemini 3.5 Pro, has yet to be released. Competitors like DeepSeek and Anthropic have launched more advanced models, particularly in generating computer code, a lucrative segment in the AI sector. Additionally, key figures like Demis Hassabis and Jeff Dean have stepped back from their roles, affecting the lab's management and engineering efforts.
OpenAI, another major player in the AI field, announced reaching one billion users in July, though it did not specify whether the figure was monthly or weekly. The company, which launched its free ChatGPT app in November 2022, has built its user base from scratch in less than four years. This user base growth is crucial for OpenAI as it prepares for a potential IPO.
In a sign of increasing competition, research firm Sensor Tower reported that ChatGPT's market share for AI assistants dropped below 50 percent in the first half of the year. This decline is attributed to the growing popularity of Gemini and other AI assistants.
For Bangladesh, the increasing adoption of AI technologies like Gemini could have implications for various sectors, including education, healthcare, and business, potentially offering new tools and efficiencies.
