Bangladesh is taking proactive steps to resolve its ongoing energy crisis through a combination of short and long-term plans, according to State Minister for Power and Energy Aninda Islam Amit. The government is strengthening its role in the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) sector, considering direct imports, and prioritizing infrastructure for liquefied natural gas (LNG) to ensure supply and price stability. Additionally, a 10-year action plan for the power and energy sectors will be presented in parliament, aiming to incorporate views from various stakeholders to address the country's daily gas demand of over 1,200 million cubic feet.
The government is focusing on both domestic gas exploration and import infrastructure to meet the rising demand. Amit highlighted the significance of coal-fired plants, skilled manpower development, and transparent procurement processes. A new bidding round for gas exploration is expected to conclude by November, reflecting the government's commitment to exploring domestic resources. The state minister also emphasized the importance of renewable energy development to enhance the sector's long-term stability.
Land has been allocated at Matarbari for an LNG terminal, and necessary infrastructure is being prioritized to boost LNG imports, ensuring long-term energy security. Amit expressed optimism that these coordinated initiatives, along with expanded import infrastructure and renewable energy projects, will bring positive changes to the energy sector, ultimately benefiting the nation.
