In a recent address, Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu highlighted the Teesta master plan's crucial role in transforming the northern region's fortunes and ensuring its prosperity. Speaking at a workshop organized by the Department of Disaster Management, Dulu emphasized that the successful implementation of the plan will help bring under control disasters like floods and droughts, thereby creating a prosperous area. The workshop was held to update participants on the 'Improvement of Flood Early Warning and Dissemination Systems at the Local Level' project, which is being executed across flood-prone districts.
Dulu noted that the project, part of the larger 'Enhancing Resilience of Vulnerable Communities through Infrastructure Capacity Development and Information (PROBHATI)' initiative, is currently being implemented in 19 upazilas in Gaibandha, Kurigram, and Jamalpur. The objective is to improve local flood forecasting systems and provide timely flood warnings to the communities at risk.
The minister expressed the government's commitment to supporting those affected by disasters, stating that the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief is a beacon of hope for those who have lost everything. 'In this land of six seasons, we have grown up alongside disasters. Various types of disasters strike the country regularly. The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief stands beside people who have lost everything in the devastation caused by disasters,' Dulu said.
The workshop, held at the BIAM auditorium in the capital, was attended by State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief M Iqbal Hossain and other key officials, including Department of Disaster Management director general Razwanur Rahman, Disaster Management and Relief Secretary (in-charge) ABM Shafiqul Haidar, and Chief Engineer of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) Belal Hossain.
Dulu’s remarks come as part of ongoing efforts to mitigate the impact of natural disasters in the region. The Teesta master plan is seen as a vital component in these efforts, with the government determined to protect and enhance the livelihoods of those living in the northern areas.
