Authorities have detained a man in Shahjahanpur on suspicion of strangling his wife, Swapna Khatun Akter, to death at their rented residence in Gulbagh. The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Rubel Mia, was apprehended on August 9. The couple had been married for about 11 years and shared two children. Mia, who was unemployed and reportedly addicted to drugs, had a history of conflicts with his spouse.
On the evening of August 8, local community leaders intervened to resolve a dispute between the couple, following an alleged assault by Mia on his wife the previous day. Despite their efforts, another quarrel erupted that night. The following morning, Swapna demanded that Rubel leave the house after discovering broken household items. Mia then allegedly strangled her and fled the scene.
A relative discovered Swapna's body on the bed and contacted the police through the national emergency service 999. Her brother subsequently filed a murder complaint with the Shahjahanpur Police Station. Initial interrogation by the police revealed that Mia confessed to the crime, later substantiating his confession with a statement made under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure before a court.
The case highlights the ongoing challenges of domestic violence and the complexities that arise when addiction and unemployment exacerbate marital tensions. Authorities emphasize the importance of community intervention and timely police response to domestic disputes to prevent such tragedies.
