In a significant step towards enhancing its presence in South Asia, Visa President for Asia-Pacific Stephen Karpin recently visited Dhaka. During a meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Karpin highlighted Visa's keen interest in expanding its investment and business operations in Bangladesh. The meeting, held at the Cabinet Division of Bangladesh Secretariat, was attended by several high-ranking officials including Prime Minister's Adviser on Posts, Telecommunications, Information Technology, Science and Technology Rehan Asif Asad, and Bangladesh Bank Governor Md Mostaqur Rahman.
Karpin emphasized Visa's vision to leverage Bangladesh's potential in digital financial services, technology, and innovation. He proposed several collaborative efforts, including encouraging bank account holders to adopt card-based transactions and expanding the scope of digital payments across the nation. Visa's interest in using artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the security, convenience, and speed of banking and digital payment systems was also discussed.
The meeting delved into the possibility of integrating Visa cards into various government and public service systems, such as metro rail, toll plazas, and expressways, to facilitate everyday transactions. Karpin expressed Visa's intention to contribute to Bangladesh's digital and creative economies, highlighting the need for an effective digital payment system to support foreign earnings for Bangladeshi freelancers.
Visa's interest in establishing a technology development center or global service center in Bangladesh was also a key point of discussion. Such a center could create employment opportunities and further solidify Visa's commitment to the country's economic growth. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman welcomed these proposals, stressing the importance of private-sector partnerships in strengthening Bangladesh's digital economy.
The meeting concluded with an emphasis on fostering cooperation between international companies like Visa and the Bangladeshi government. The Prime Minister's administration sees these partnerships as crucial for enhancing the nation's investment and technological capabilities.
