In a significant development, two of the faulty Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRUs) have resumed partial operations, providing much-needed relief to the national gas grid. According to Abdul Mannan, Chairman of Petrobangla, these units are now supplying around 750 mmcfd of gas, helping to alleviate the ongoing crisis. Each of the two FSRUs has a capacity of 500 mmcfd, collectively amounting to 1,000 mmcfd. This restoration comes after a severe technical glitch and fire at one of the FSRUs on July 21, 2026, which temporarily disrupted gas supply across the country.
The Chairman highlighted the efforts of the technical experts who worked tirelessly to resolve the issues at the quickest possible time. He assured the public that further steps are being taken to ensure the stability and efficiency of the national gas supply. The government has also taken proactive measures to secure additional liquefied natural gas (LNG) to meet emergency domestic energy needs.
In response to the crisis, the government approved the procurement of eight cargoes of LNG from international companies including Blackcube International Ltd, Global Fuel Supplies Pte Ltd, Plentitude Energy Sdn Bhd, and Maxwell International SPC. Additionally, a cargo from Aramco Trading Singapore is scheduled for delivery on August 11-12, 2026. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to stabilize the national gas supply and prevent future disruptions.
Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood expressed confidence that the situation would improve within the next two to three days. He reassured the public that gas transmission would resume, and the pressure in the gas network would gradually stabilize. The government has also been working to import LNG to meet the country's demand, with 11 cargoes brought in during July alone, and nine in June.
Petrobangla has long-term contracts with QatarEnergy for 2.5 million tonnes per annum and 1.8 million tonnes per year, as well as an active deal with OQT for LNG. These contracts and additional procurement efforts demonstrate the government's commitment to ensuring a steady and reliable gas supply for the nation.
