President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today called upon local businessmen and expatriates to make greater investments in Sylhet’s tourism, tea, fisheries, industries, and other sectors. Speaking at a civic reception organized by Sylhet City Corporation, the President highlighted Sylhet’s vast potential in these areas, emphasizing the need for more investment to further develop these sectors.
Tourism and Tea Industry Potential
The President noted that Sylhet’s natural beauty, including its hills, rivers, waterfalls, tea gardens, forests, and haors, makes it a major tourism destination in Bangladesh. He believes that with more investment, the tourism industry in Sylhet can grow significantly. "Sylhet has huge potential in tourism, tea, fisheries and industries. The hills, rivers, waterfalls, tea gardens, forests and haors here together make Sylhet one of the major tourism regions of Bangladesh. I believe there are opportunities to develop these potentials further," he said.
Highlighting the potential of the tea industry, the President said, "Sylhet’s tea gardens are famous not only in Bangladesh but throughout the world. That is why Sylhet is moving much further ahead." He also mentioned his recent meeting with the Pakistan High Commissioner, where they discussed the possibility of importing tea from Sylhet.
Call for Investment and Communal Harmony
President Alamgir urged small entrepreneurs to utilize the potential of expatriate investment in various sectors including energy, agriculture, industry, tea industry, tourism, and gas. He appreciated the contribution of Sylhet’s expatriate community, stating that they play a crucial role in both Sylhet’s and Bangladesh’s economy.
The President also called for unity and cooperation to protect democracy and rebuild the country. He emphasized the importance of communal harmony, stating, "In Bangladesh, Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, Christians, we live here together and our communal harmony is the greatest beauty of our country."
Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury, Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Whip Alhaj Md GK Gaus, Bangladesh Ambassador to Mexico M. Mushfiqul Fazal (Ansarey), Sylhet City Corporation administrator Abdul Quiyum Choudhury, among others, spoke on the occasion, supporting the President’s call for increased investment and development in Sylhet.
