Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen today paid a courtesy call on President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at Bangabhaban. The ambassador conveyed greetings from Chinese President Xi Jinping and extended an invitation for the President to visit China at a convenient time. This meeting underscores the ongoing efforts to enhance the longstanding friendly relations between Bangladesh and China.
During the meeting, Yao Wen briefed President Alamgir on the outcomes of the Prime Minister’s recent visit to China. Key highlights included the laying of the foundation stone for the China Economic and Industrial Zone (CEIZ), the signing of a commercial agreement to modernize Mongla Port, and the potential for cooperation in establishing the Mongla Export Processing Zone (EPZ). These developments are expected to significantly boost economic ties between the two nations.
President Alamgir expressed hope that the recent visit by the Prime Minister would further strengthen the friendly relations between Bangladesh and China. In response, Ambassador Yao Wen hoped that at least 30 Chinese companies would invest around US$500 million in Bangladesh, creating employment opportunities for around one lakh people. This investment could play a crucial role in Bangladesh’s economic development and job creation.
The discussion also covered a range of issues of mutual interest, including the Teesta River Integrated Management and Restoration Project, the initiation of a foreign minister-level strategic dialogue, and the launch of "2+2" diplomacy and defence dialogue at the state minister level. Additionally, the process of exporting Bangladeshi jackfruits, mangoes, and guavas to China was reviewed, along with cooperation in solar power and electric vehicle assembly.
Another significant point of discussion was the China-Bangladesh-Myanmar economic corridor, which aims to enhance regional connectivity and trade. Both sides also reiterated their commitment to addressing the Rohingya crisis through bilateral efforts. The meeting concluded with both sides expressing their determination to elevate the existing friendly relations through stronger and more multifaceted cooperation.
The ambassador recalled President Alamgir’s visit to China during his tenure as the Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives (LGRD) Minister, highlighting the long-standing relationship between the two nations. The meeting was attended by the President's Public Division Secretary and Military Secretary, indicating the high-level importance of the discussions.
