Hundreds of houses in Litur Char, Rampal upazila, have been flooded following a breach in the local embankment, causing severe distress among residents as tidal water inundated the area. The breach has led to immediate demands for both temporary repairs and the construction of a durable, sustainable embankment.
Immediate Impact and Resident Distress
The flooding has resulted in tidal water entering at least 100 homes, with water reaching the kitchens of many residents. This has created shortages of food and safe drinking water, exacerbating the residents' distress. Additionally, the inundation has put Aman cultivation at risk, with over 200 acres of farmland potentially affected if the embankment is not repaired soon.
Large areas of Aman seedlings have already been submerged, and several fishponds have been inundated, leading to significant losses for farmers and fish cultivators. The repeated breaches of the embankment over the years have continually damaged homes, croplands, and fishponds, endangering the livelihoods and safety of the residents.
Resident Demands and Calls for Action
In response to the crisis, affected residents formed a human chain at the damaged section of the embankment, demanding immediate repair and the construction of a permanent and sustainable embankment. They highlighted the embankment's long-standing vulnerability due to lack of timely repairs and effective measures.
Residents also called for government relief and emergency supplies of safe drinking water for the affected families. Several hundred residents, including local leaders such as Gaurambha Union BNP President Md Mujibur Rahman Joardar, participated in the hour-long human chain. They sought direct intervention from State Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change Sheikh Faridul Islam and Rampal Upazila Nirbahi Officer Tamanna Ferdousi to address the situation promptly.
The incident underscores the urgent need for sustainable infrastructure solutions to protect vulnerable communities from the recurring impacts of flooding and tidal surges. Effective and durable embankments are critical not only for immediate flood protection but also for long-term agricultural and economic stability in the region.
