Police in Rajshahi arrested two youths on suspicion of preparing to commit a mugging. The youths were apprehended in the Koyerdara Christianpara area under Boalia Police Station. Authorities recovered two hasuas (a type of knife), mobile phones, including one designed to resemble a police wireless device, and a smartphone with the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police monogram.

Arrest Details

The arrested individuals, identified as S M Hasan Muktadir Cute, 23, and Sifaz Hossain, 25, were taken into custody around 6:30 pm by a team from the Detective Branch (DB) of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP). Police recovered a 31-inch hasua with an iron handle, a wireless-like mobile phone, and a smartphone from Cute. Sifaz was found with a 26-inch hasua with a wooden handle and another mobile phone.

Confession and Investigation

During preliminary interrogation, both suspects admitted to staying in the area with the intention of committing a mugging. Investigators suspect the wireless-like device had been used in various crimes, including mugging, by impersonating government officials. Police have prior records of Cute with seven cases across different RMP police stations. Sifaz has one case at Boalia Police Station and another at Charghat Police Station in Rajshahi district.

Legal Action and Public Warning

A case has been filed against the two youths at Boalia Police Station under relevant laws for allegedly preparing to commit mugging while impersonating a government employee and using a government institution's monogram and a wireless-like device. The RMP urged residents of Rajshahi metropolis to remain vigilant and warned against impersonating government officials or using government identities for criminal activities.

Why This Matters for Bangladesh

The incident highlights the ongoing issue of crime in urban areas and the efforts by law enforcement to prevent criminal activities. It underscores the importance of community vigilance and the need for strict action against those who impersonate government officials for illegal activities. Such actions not only threaten public safety but also undermine the integrity of government institutions.
