Panama declared a state of emergency over El Nino on August 28, 2026, highlighting the severity of the situation. El Nino, a weather pattern characterized by increased surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean, has global repercussions, including changes in wind patterns, rainfall, and erratic weather conditions. This year is predicted to be the hottest on record, further complicating the situation.

The Panama Canal is a critical shipping route, handling approximately five percent of global maritime trade. Ships typically book their passage through the canal well in advance, with those without bookings facing an average wait time of five days. However, the canal offers an auction system for last-minute transits, where companies can bid for priority passage. The average auction price between October 2025 and February 2026 was around $55,000, making the $5.3 million payment an extraordinary outlier.
This record payment reflects the urgent need for certain cargoes, particularly vital supplies like liquefied natural gas, to reach their destinations promptly.
