Germany has reported a record 15,800 heat-related deaths this summer, as Europe faced punishing heatwaves. The national public health institute, Robert Koch Institute (RKI), announced the grim milestone, highlighting the severe impact of rising temperatures. The worst affected group were people over 75, with 9,600 deaths recorded in a single week in late June when temperatures soared above 40°C. Another 4,000 deaths were recorded between late July and mid-August.
The previous record for heat-related deaths in Germany was 8,900 in 2018. The RKI has been collecting such data for the past decade, noting a significant increase in heat mortality this year. Extreme heat can cause death directly through heatstroke but is often fatal when combined with pre-existing conditions like cardiovascular, lung, or kidney diseases.
